Biological Resource Management (BRM) Programme Area

This Program Area is responsible for the implementation of the mandate which stipulates the protection and conservation of Biological Resource; and promotes sustainable development in Guyana.

The following are specific functions of the BRM with respect to the implementation of its mandate:

1.    To coordinate and support programmes for implementation of the national biodiversity strategy and action plan;
2.    To coordinate and support programmes for the effective regulation of coastal, marine and freshwater biological resources;
3.    To support the environmental authorisation process of development activities for the protection and conservation of biodiversity;
4.    To coordinate and support programmes, to achieve national obligations to the Convention of Biological Diversity and its protocols;
5.    To coordinate and support programme(s) that promotes assessments of biological resources;
6.    To manage system(s) for the collection and sharing of biological resources information;
7.    To support communication, education and public awareness programmes for the protection, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.


More specifically the BRM is involved in the following activities as it pertains to the above stated functions:

  • Develop and execute an implementation plan for the NBSAP;
  • Develop an Coastal Marine Resources (CMR) Management Sub-Programme Strategy and Action Plan;
  • Conduct assessments of aquatic biological resources;
  • Outline and implement a framework for capacity building in coastal, marine and freshwater resource management;
  • Monitor and evaluate complaints related to biological resources;
  • Facilitate and support implementation of GEF Funded Projects within the biodiversity focal area;
  • Support the enactment and implementation of legislations that align with national obligations to the CBD and its protocols;
  • Support national biodiversity needs assessments;
  • Maintain and update the National Clearing House Mechanism;
  • Expand and improve awareness and appreciation of the value of biodiversity;
  • Maintain network of national, regional and international partners to promote biodiversity conservation.
