EPA completes final three workshops under the EU FLEGT Programme

 

As part of the EU FLEGT Programme, the Environmental Protection Agencyconducted the final three workshops in Regions Three and Four. Seventy (70) participants from eleven (11) Community Forest Organisations benefited. These workshops were held at the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) training facility in Yarrowkabra, Region Four and the Caria Caria Community Center, Region Three.

Through the FAO-EUFLEGT funded project “Providing Capacity Building Assistance to Community Forest Organizations (CFOs)on the Environmental Authorisation process in Guyana”, the Agency conducted twelve (12) workshops over a five (5) months period in eight(8) Of Guyana’s administrative regions. These workshops were attended by three hundred and nineteen (319) persons including loggers, community members, women and youths from forty eight (48) Community Forestry Organisations (CFOs).

Region 1 Community Forestry Organisations benefits from EPA workshop under EU FLEGT programme

 

January 15, 2019 - Twenty seven (27) representatives from five (5) Community Forest (CFOs) benefitted from the day long workshop held in Mabaruma, Region 1. This is the fourth workshop hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the EU FLEGT programme. The workshop was held at the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) and aimed at sensitising operators within Community Forest Organisations on the Environmental Authorisation process. The overall aim of the programme is to ensure, all forest operators become authorised in keeping with Section 14 of the Environmental Protection Act Cap. 20:05, laws of Guyana, before development consent is given, in this case the harvesting and utilisation of forest resources, an Operator must first seek approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

This workshop which was held in the Boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council,Region 7, focused on sensitisingCommunity Forest Operators on the Environmental Authorisation process. This was the sixth workshop under the European Union Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (EU FLEGT) programme executed by the Environmental Protection Agency. The overall aim of the programme is to ensure all Community Forest Operators become authorised in keeping with the Environmental Protection Act Cap. 20:05, laws of Guyana.

EPA engages students and Community Forestry Organisations in Region 9 on Environmental Authorisation under the EU FLEGT programme.


January 17, 2019 – Twenty-eight (28) persons from the two Community Forest Organisations, the North Rupununi District Development Council, Bina Hill Institute and the Guyana Forestry Commission were beneficiaries of EPA’s workshop held in Annai, Region 9. This workshop held on January 17, complements those previously held in Regions 10, 2, and 1. As part of the EU FLEGT programme, these workshops aims to build capacity of Community Forest Operators on the importance of Environmental Authorisation for the sustainable utilisation of forest resources. The overall aim of the programme is to ensure all forest operators become authorised in keeping the Environmental Protection Act Cap. 20:05, laws of Guyana. The day-long interactive workshop was divided into a theoretical aspect during the morning session which included guidance on filling out the Environmental Authorisation application form. However, during the second half of the workshop, participants were engaged on best practices relative to waste management, air quality, noise management as well as, occupational safety and health.
