World Environment Day (WED) is the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. WED activities take place annually all year round but climax on 5 June.

The theme for this year’s observances is “Forests: Nature at your service” in support of the UN International Year of Forests and seeks to underscore the importance of forest ecosystems to people.

As the coordinating body for environmental activities, the Environmental Protection Agency-Guyana took the lead in organising WED activities. The annual Green Walk was executed on June 5, which coincided with WED 2011 as well as the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency.

This year, approximately eight hundred and ninety five (895) participants enjoyed the Walk from the Umana Yana to the Botanical Gardens. Environmental Clubs - Marian Academy and Graham’s Hall, the University of Guyana, various agencies, Ministries and organizations supported the activity this year. The Green Walk 2011 was a great success this year and this was evidenced by the enthusiasm of the participants.
